What the difference between fma and fma brootherhood?

i was watching full metal alchemist and it was in Japanese but it had English subtitles then i went to see another episode it was in English but the episode was different from the Japanese one the episode mentioned stuff that was in the previous episode it was all different can someone explain this to me why there like all mixed up and different from the English ones
