Are more expensive irons such as Taylormade or Callaway irons, less susceptible to breaking?

My Spalding 3 iron of 10 years broke at the driving range. The clubhead broke off and flew into the range after hitting the ground hard by accident a few times. But I hardly ever even used this club since I had it.
