How do you enter in Banjo Kazooie cheat codes?

When I go to Treasure Trove Cove, I empty out the hole, go to the cave, kill the crab, go back in, enter in Cheat, and then when I enter it in it doesn't do anything. Do I need to enter it in with spaces? Leave the level?
